• Workshops provide new twist to this year’s Hendricks County Civil War Heritage Days

    April 19, 2012 No comments

In only its second year, the Civil War Heritage Days will add some activities prior to the June 23-24 festival to enhance the experience for participants.

Activities begin this weekend with the first of three Civil War clothing workshops. During the three free workshops, Seamstress Candy Smith will lead participants through making a Civil War costume or a re-enactor’s period-correct outfit.

The workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday, April 21, and again May 12 and June 9 at the Danville Public Library, 101 S. Indiana St. Smith will answer questions and guide participants through the construction of their Civil War wardrobe during each workshop.

Information concerning patterns and materials will be discussed and available. Smith created her own dress and the uniform which was worn by General Grant at last year’s Civil War Heritage Days.

In addition to the clothing, a free dance workshop also will be offered at 7 p.m. June 22 in the Crawley Business Center above the Hendricks County Convention and Visitors Bureau offices at 8 W. Main St., Danville. The dance workshop will prepare those who wish to participate in the first-ever Civil War Heritage Days Grand Ball held from 7 to 10 p.m. June 23 in the Hendricks County Courthouse Rotunda. Cost to participate in or watch the Grand Ball will be $10 a person.

Registration for all workshops is preferred but walk-ins will be welcome. For more information or to register, call (317) 745-2604 and ask for Cindy or Steve.

Civil War Heritage Days, which is sponsored by the Hendricks County Historical Museum and Danville Public Library, honors the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War with activities from that time period. Events during the two-day festival include Civil War unit camps, agriculture and transportation displays, music, a fashion show, high tea, a church service, children’s games and much more.
