Indianapolis police say a woman was killed when she was hit by a car at a busy intersection on the city’s northwest side on Sunday.

Officers were called to the intersection of 86th Street and Colby Boulevard on reports of a pedestrian struck about 7:10 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a 66-year-old woman who had been hit by a car. Police said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said the woman walked into the intersection while the traffic light was red for east and westbound traffic. Investigators said the victim continued crossing and was struck. The driver of the vehicle attempted to avoid the collision by swerving.

Police say they don’t suspect that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

The accident remains under investigation, and the victim’s identity was not released.
