Boone County authorities are investigating a hit-and-run that killed a woman walking home from church Sunday night.

According to Chris Burcham of the Boone County Sheriff’s department, 78 year old Anita Wernsing of Fayette was believed to be walking from Mt. Tabor Primitive Church to her home, which sits directly across the street, in the 7000 block of South State Road 267.

Wernsing was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound on 267.  After striking Wernsing, the vehicle apparently ran off the road and continued northbound without stopping.

Wernsing was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 6:00 p.m.

Witnesses found her about 100 yards from the church.  The hit and run was believed to have occurred only a minute before.

The Boone County Crash Team was called to the scene to investigate the death. Vehicle parts were found at the scene of the crash also, and are being viewed to see if they can provide information resulting in an arrest.

Anyone with information about the crash or anyone involved, please contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Office at 765-482-1412 or at tips@co.boone.in.us.
