A woman was critically injured early this morning trying to escape police in a car that had been reported stolen.

Just before 1 a.m., police attempted to stop a 2001 Dodge Stratus near Harding and Howard streets on the Indianapolis’ southwest side.

Detectives said the car had been reported stolen just a few days earlier.

Police said the driver, 22 year old Erica Shelton of Indianapolis, refused to stop and continued south on Harding Street before heading east on Troy Avenue.

As police neared the intersection of Troy Avenue and Shelby Street, officers said they saw Shelton lose control of the car and crash into a utility pole.

The impact of the crash threw Shelton from the car. She was rushed to Wishard Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Detectives said Shelton had active felony warrants for dealing meth and possession of meth.

Further charges were pending the outcome of the investigation, officials said.
