• Woman dies after being pulled from Broad Ripple canal

Emergency crews pulled a woman from the canal in Broad Ripple yesterday after she disappeared while swimming with friends. Police later said the woman had died.

Crews were called to the scene just before 8 p.m. That’s when, witnesses said, a man ran out from some trees in a steep ravine, yelling that his friend had drowned.

    Bystanders called police.

By 8:15 p.m. divers were in the water and found the 24-year-old white woman about 10 minutes later – after she’d been submerged for about half an hour to 40 minutes.

She was taken to an area hospital, reportedly unconscious. An IMPD spokesperson later confirmed that the woman had died.

The man who had alerted bystanders to the possible drowning was put into handcuffs at one point after he yelled and acted out against police for several minutes. He was taken away in a Marion County Sheriff’s Department van.

He told police the woman was his girlfriend.

No identification information was available late Tuesday night, and the exact circumstances of the incident were also unknown.
