A deputy with the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department has been arrested, accused of trying to fraudulently obtain pain pills.

34 year old Derek C. Cerny of Terre Haute, was arrested yesterday on a preliminary charge of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or deceit, a Class D felony.

Police say Cerny had obtained and had attempted to obtain multiple controlled substances from various Terre Haute physicians during the past year.

Police say Cerny, a six-year veteran of the sheriff’s department, at times tried to get controlled substances while on duty.

Cerny was being held at the Clay County Jail. He will appear in court today.
