Police say two people were killed in a collision between a train and a vehicle at the Boone-Hendricks county line Tuesday.

Investigators say 80-year-old Alice Schooler of Lebanon was driving a Chevy Impala north on Boone County Line Road, crossing railroad tracks when it was struck by the eastbound CSX train. Schooler and the front seat passenger, 72-year-old Patricia Manion, also of Lebanon, died at the scene.

Another passenger, 81-year-old Joan Gochenour of Lebanon was flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis in serious condition. A hospital spokesperson says Gochenour was listed in critical condition Tuesday night.

The train’s conductor told police he sounded the horn as he approached the crossing. Witnesses said they heard the horn.

Video from the train’s engine showed Schooler’s car crossing the tracks without hesitating or stopping. Police say there are signs marking the crossing, but there is no stop sign or warning arms.

The 22-car train was transporting steel.
