An overnight incident in which a man shot at police officers has left an innocent bystander and a police K-9 dead.

Police had been searching for the suspect, who was found dead Friday morning. During his shooting spree, officers say he also injured two officers.

Officers say the incident began around 11 p.m. Thursday at Water and East streets in Pendleton with shots fired at the officers.

Anderson police officer Marty Dulworth sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken by helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital.

A second officer, who is from Pendleton, sustained a very minor cut from a flying bullet.

A witness at the scene said that the suspect had broken into her garage prior to the shooting.

The suspect has been identified as Jim Kenneth Bailey. Police officials shut down the town of Pendleton while searching for him, but the town was reopened to traffic after officers found Bailey dead.

The man police describe as an innocent victim was John Neal Shull Jr. of Pendleton. He was found dead at the scene.

Police believe Shull was shot before officers arrived at 10:30 p.m. He was inside a truck on Water Street when he was shot.

The K-9 has been identified as Kilo. He has been with the department since 2010.

SWAT teams from the Indiana State Police, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the Anderson Police Department and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office all responded Thursday night and overnight.
