• Trafalgar woman swings ax at police after death of 3 year old son

A Johnson County mother is accused of killing her 3-year old son and attacking police with an ax.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says the child was found around 9 p.m. Monday at the Trafalgar Pointe Apartments, in the 700 block of West Trafalgar Pointe Way.

Police say 33-year-old Amanda Smith was hiding in the apartment closet, when she jumped out at officers swinging an ax. Officers called in the SWAT team, but say Smith surrendered before SWAT arrived.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says they received a 911 call from Smith saying that her son was dead. Then another 911 call came in from Smith’s mother saying her daughter told her that she had done something to her child that could not be undone.

Officials say that police forced entry into the apartment because Smith would not answer the door.

Smith’s 3-year-old son was pronounced dead at the hospital, but the cause of death is unknown.

Smith was being checked out at Community Hospital South before being transported to the Johnson County Jail to face charges.
