The Town of Brownsburg donated more than 1,000 non-perishable items today to the Messiah Lutheran Church food pantry to help stock its shelves. Town departments, residents, and community partners supported the “Let’s Give” collection of canned and boxed items over the past month.
The Hendricks County Food Pantry Coalition’s member pantries reported serving nearly 12,000 families last year. The recent cut to SNAP benefits (food stamps) leaves families already struggling to put enough food on the table with an average $1.40 to spend on each meal and is expected to put a heavier reliance on food pantries.
Through its relationship with the Hendricks County Health Partnership and IU Health West Hospital, Brownsburg Farmers Market vendors and shoppers donated more than 50 shopping bags of non-perishables and fresh produce to local food banks over the summer. The “Let’s Give” food drive met the Town’s goal of exceeding that amount going in to the holiday season.
