Are visions of sugar plums and other joys of the season dancing in your head? Then check out The Gathering Together’s 12th Annual Holiday Open House. The event will be Saturday, December 14th from10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 15th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. One-of-a-kind items will be available for sale, crafted by volunteer artisans. There will also be goodies to buy, from the home’s classic red pepper jelly to an array of holiday cookies and confections.
Founded in 2001 by hospice-trained nurse Rita Fiorentino, the home for the terminally ill and their families has seen steady growth and is unique to Indiana, providing its services free of charge. More than a warm place to die with dignity, The Gathering Together provides a haven for families seeking a nonclinical setting for their loved ones in their final days. The home has housed many local residents and was recently expanded to double its capacity. The expansion was a culmination of a community wide volunteer and vendor effort. Fiorentino said, “There are simply no words to express our gratitude for all of the blessings these volunteers and companies have showered upon us. It seems a fitting time that this holiday season will be our first opportunity to show off the finished space.”
Raffle tickets are available for $10 each. Prizes include a two-night stay in a San Francisco bed and breakfast (airfare not included), a wine-tasting, free monthly craft classes and large gift baskets. The prizes will be drawn on December 31, 2013 and participants do not need to be present to win. The raffle tickets may be purchased through PayPal on the organization’s website at www.thegatheringtogether.org.
Abigail Baker, a Plainfield resident, has been coming to the open house since it started 12 years ago and has watched the event grow. “Each year I look forward to the Holiday Open House at The Gathering Together. It is a wonderful place filled with room after room of handmade decorations and so many kind, giving people. You walk in and know something very special happens there,” Baker said.
