Indianapolis firefighters were called to a fire on the city’s northwest side around 3:15 a.m. this morning.

The two-story residence located at 1731 West 65th Place is just west of Grandview Drive.

Arriving units were met by heavy flames through the roof. Twenty minutes into the blaze, fire officials declared the building no longer safe and ordered firefighters out of the building to continue fighting the fire from the outside.

Preliminary information from investigators indicate a 25-year-old man had been living at his grandmother’s house while she was living in a nursing home.

Police had been called to the same residence shortly before 1 a.m. on a report of an attempted arson. The male resident said he was able to put out the fire at the rear of the residence by himself.

The cause of the second fire is currently under investigation.

The blaze reportedly started outside the rear of the home.

The home is a total loss. No one was injured.
