• Super Weekend at IMS begins today

    July 26, 2012 No comments

Brickyard weekend starts today, and even if you have never been to the track before, it would be a great day to catch the excitement.

Activity has been going on all week to prepare for what will be a first of its kind for Brickyard weekend. Already, campers have started to arrive, preparing their campsites.

For the past Brickyard races, the focus was on the 400 Race, but a decline in attendance and ticket sales have forced IMS officials to reboot the race weekend. This year, along with the NASCAR Sprint Cup series race on Sunday, the Speedway will host the NASCAR Nationwide series race on Saturday and the GRAND-AM series race on Friday. This will mark the first time that both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide series races will be held together at the Speedway. Previously, the Nationwide series race was held at Lucas Oil Raceway.

The Speedway’s Doug Boles said the reason for the Super Weekend is to help create a larger event to help combat outside forces which may be keeping fans away.

Ticket sales are on pace with last year, but Boles said he is optimistic they will pick up.

Events for Thursday include two NASCAR Nationwide Series Practices. The first is from noon to 3:00 p.m., the second is from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Starting at 5:00, the 4th Annual Hauler Parade will begin along Main Street in Speedway.

Officials at the IMS say the access to drivers and cars is unprecedented.
