• Stewart and Kenseth win Daytona 500 qualifiers

Tony Stewart won the first qualifying race for the Daytona 500.

The defending NASCAR champion held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Thursday’s first 150-mile race. The last lap was marred by an accident involving Danica Patrick.

Patrick was hit by Aric Almirola and the contact sent her car sliding across the track and into an inside retaining wall. The contact lifted her Chevrolet off its wheels, but she was able to climb from the car unscathed.

Michael McDowell and Robby Gordon were the drivers who raced their way into Sunday’s season-opening Daytona 500.

Two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip wrecked as he tried to return to the track after a late pit stop. The accident eliminated him from Sunday’s race.

Matt Kenseth used a bold pass of teammate Greg Biffle to win the second Daytona 500 qualifying race.

Biffle was leading headed into the final lap Thursday but tried to block Kenseth, who dove to the inside and used a push from Jimmie Johnson to take the lead.

The victory gives Kenseth the fourth starting spot in Sunday’s season opener. Teammates Carl Edwards and Biffle will start on the front row. Kenseth will be lined up next to defending NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, who won the first 150-mile qualifying race.

Joe Nemechek and Dave Blaney each raced their way into the 500 in the second qualifying race. Robby Gordon and Michael McDowell earned the two spots up for grabs in the first race.
