A trooper from the Indiana State Police was taken to IU Health West after being struck by a motorist while inside his squad car.

The accident happened along the westbound lanes of I-465 on the south side shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday morning.

Officers say Sara Gammon was heading westbound in her tan Ford Focus when she lost control of her car and slammed into Senior Trooper Mike Meinczinger’s patrol car.

Trooper Meinczinger was parked on the shoulder of the roadway running radar at the time of the accident.

According to a release, the impact caused the State Police vehicle and the Ford Focus to spin into the high speed lane where both came to rest in the high speed lane.

Investigators said impact from the Ford Focus was so hard that the driver’s seat of Meinczinger’s vehicle broke and his car was totaled from this crash.

Trooper Meinczinger was taken to Clarion West Hospital suffering from cuts and abrasions. He was treated and released.
