• State colleges to answer questions on tuition hikes

    September 08, 2011 No comments

State Rep. Jeff Espich is asking university officials to defend tuition hikes made over the last decade.

Espich says that growth in tuition costs at public universities “far outpaces” growth in Hoosier incomes. He noted that in 2000 average in-state tuition rate accounted for about 12 percent of income. By 2013 that average was expected to grow to 19 percent of income.

Espich chairs the state’s Ways and Means Committee, which planned to meet today to grill presidents and trustees of the state’s public universities.

Representatives from the Commission for Higher Education, Indiana University, Purdue University and other state universities were scheduled to testify.
