• St. Malachy ‘Walk With Haiti’ Scheduled April 9

    March 08, 2011 No comments

St. Malachy Catholic Church will hold its fourth annual “Walk With Haiti” family fitness event Saturday, April 9, at Williams Park, Brownsburg.  Registration and opening activities will begin at 8:30 a.m.   A timed three-mile run is scheduled for 9:00 with the walkers to start at about 9:30.

Proceeds support projects benefiting St. Malachy’s twin parish, St. Marguerite Church in Port Margot, Haiti.

This year’s Walk will feature Caribbean music with a demonstration of authentic Haitian drumming.  A Haitian guest speaker will provide an update of the country’s status following the devastating earthquake and cholera epidemic which continue to plague the country.  There will also be a silent auction, DJ entertainment and complimentary refreshments.

The spread of cholera has increased Haiti’s need, especially that of the St. Marguerite medical clinic.  The staff there has been overwhelmed with the number of walk-in cholera patients.   At its outbreak, they were providing 24-hour service.  The clinic, considered one of the finest in all of Haiti, was developed through St. Malachy’s regular medical missions there.   St. Malachy parishioners and associates (doctors, nurses, etc.) have made trips to St. Marguerite every month so far this year to help tend to the many suffering from cholera, an intestinal infection caused by contaminated water or food.

More information about “Walk With Haiti” is available from Beth or Buz Lewis, at 317-407-2384 or by visiting the Haiti Twinning pages on the St. Malachy website where a pre-registration form is available.  Reach the site at:  www.saintmalachyparish.org .  Walk-up registration will be available at the park on the day of the event.   Fee is $25 per person or $80 per family.  Prizes will be awarded for the individual and team that raise the most money.

Walkers and runners collected over $14,000 in personal and corporate sponsorships and donations last year.  St. Malachy and St. Marguerite have been “twins” since 1996.
