• Some Westlake Elementary school students may have been exposed to tuberculosis

Several dozen families learned this week that their children may have been exposed to tuberculosis at school.

The Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township is notifying parents of 46 Westlake Elementary School students involved in a tutoring program that they may have been exposed to the bacteria, which can attack the lungs and other organs and can be fatal if left untreated.

The exposure could have occurred between February and April, the school said in a news release Wednesday. The school system is working with the Marion County Health Department to provide free testing for the students.

Not everyone infected with the bacteria becomes ill, but the bacteria can lay dormant in a person’s body for years, then attack the body when the immune system is weakened for some reason, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
