• Shepard to remain as acting Indiana chief justice

    March 05, 2012 No comments

Retired Indiana Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard will remain as acting head of the state Supreme Court through March 23.

Shepard stepped down as chief justice on Sunday. But the state Constitution calls for the most senior member of the court to serve as acting chief justice. Shepard is the most senior member of the court, having served nearly 25 years.

After Shepard steps down entirely on March 23, Justice Brent Dickson will take over as acting chief justice and will serve until a new chief justice is selected by the state judicial nominating commission.

Before the new chief justice is named, Governor Mitch Daniels must appoint a new court justice from among nominees Jane Siegel, Mark Massa and state Court of Appeals Judge Cale Bradford.
