Sen. Connie Lawson Encourages Hoosiers to Attend Thursday’s Public Redistricting Meeting in Indianapolis
March 29, 2011 No commentsMembers of the Indiana House and Senate Election committees on Thursday will conduct a public hearing in Indianapolis to receive input on how new maps for the Indiana House of Representatives, Senate and congressional districts should be drawn.
I encourage Hoosiers to take advantage of this opportunity to share their viewpoints with lawmakers. Thursday’s hearing is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. in the Indiana Government Center South Auditorium, 302 West Washington St.
On March 25 and 26, members of the House and Senate Election committees held public hearings on redistricting in Crown Point, Columbus, Elkhart, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Jeffersonville, Lafayette and Terre Haute. The hearings were designed to allow the public to share their viewpoints on redistricting as the General Assembly begins the process of drawing new boundaries for legislative and congressional districts.
Under the Indiana Constitution, the General Assembly elected during the year in which a federal decennial census is taken shall fix by law the number of senators and representatives and apportion them among districts according to the number of inhabitants in each district, as revealed by the census.
