The results of Brownsburg’s citizen survey conducted at the end of 2011 are in. The Town received high ratings for the level of customer service provided by municipal employees, public safety, and overall quality of life.

Eighty-seven percent of survey respondents rated the overall quality of life in Brownsburg as excellent or good, which is above the national comparison. Most reported that they plan to stay for the next five years and that they would recommend Brownsburg as a place to live.

Crime prevention and police and fire services ratings were all higher than the national and regional comparisons. More than 90 percent of respondents said they feel very or somewhat safe from violent crimes and 89 percent feel safe from environmental hazards. Police services were rated excellent or good by 89 percent of respondents, and 98 percent rated fire services excellent or good.

Of respondents who had contact in-person, over the phone, or by email with a Town of Brownsburg employee in the last year, 82 percent said their impression was excellent or good. Ratings for Town employees’ knowledge, responsiveness and courteousness were all above the national comparison.

The three characteristics that received the least positive ratings were employment opportunities, ease of bicycle travel, and traffic flow on major streets. The timing of the survey coincided with the construction and traffic delays on State Road 267 and Grant Street, potentially contributing to the rating much below the national comparison. When asked which was a higher priority for improvements, 58 percent indicated State Road 267 while 42 percent said Ronald Reagan Parkway.

The town-wide survey, sponsored by the International City/County Management Association with National Research Center, was sent to a random sample of 1,200 Brownsburg households. It had a high response rate of 37 percent; typical response rates range from 25 to 40 percent. Town of Brownsburg leaders will use the results to help identify areas for improvement and to make future budget decisions about the types of services the municipality provides to its residents.
