Brownsburg East Middle School teacher Sara Reeves was recently chosen by a selection committee at the University of Indianapolis as Brownsburg Schools’ representative for the Indiana Teacher of the Year.

The eighth-grade math teacher was recognized for her leadership, character, and effectiveness in the classroom.

A Brownsburg Community School Corporation educator for six years, Reeves is a 2001 Brownsburg High School alumnus. Like her mother, retired East Middle School teacher Ann Weller, Reeves found herself drawn to education and “tried it out” through mission trips, private tutoring, and tutoring children at the Dayspring Center in Indianapolis. Although her mother taught English, Reeves was always interested in math and says she enjoys the problem-solving aspect of the discipline.

After graduating from the University of Indianapolis, she pursued a position at the middle school level, because she says it’s a challenging time for youngsters.

Although as a new teacher, Reeves was surprised by the amount of multi-tasking involved, she now finds time to serve in leadership roles as Team Leader, EMS Leadership Team Member, and FCA sponsor. She continues to stretch professionally by pursuing her administrative license and has conducted a study of Brownsburg Schools’ accelerated math program.

Reeves has submitted her portfolio into competition for the Indiana State Teacher of the year. The winner will be announced in December.

CSO Architects sponsored the BCSC Teacher of the Year with a cash award.
