• Plainfield to offer residents another chance to opt-in to sewer program

    June 05, 2012 No comments

The Plainfield Town council has given residents more options when it comes to enrolling in the summer sewer rate program.

The ordinance helps homeowners with their sewer rate over the summer months when they may be watering their lawns more often. The ordinance gives sewer customers a flat rate through the summer months.

Plainfield Town Manager Rich Carlucci explained that residents enroll in the program for $50. Will have to pay for the water because they are using it but they won’t be increasing their sewer usage because it’s going on the vegetation.

The amendment that was made this week offers a change for late comers and reflects a $10 increase.

In other Plainfield Town Council business, the council tabled a new ordinance that was proposed to create a “General Business License.”

The ordinance passed the first reading during the council’s May 14 meeting. It calls for a $25 fee for the license. Each holder of the “General Business License” will be required to update information annually with no additional fee.

The only time the fee will be charged is for a new business, if a business changes ownership, or if the nature of the business changes.

Businesses violating the ordinance will be fined no less than $50 and no more than $100 for the first offense. Subsequent offenses will be no less than $100 and no more than $150, according to the draft of the ordinance that passed the first reading.

Carlucci said several business owners attended the May 29 meeting and voiced concerns about the proposed ordinance.

Council president Robin Brandgard said more research and fine tuning will be going into the ordinance.

Brandgard added there were also questions raised about the application process in regards to who would make the decisions on who would be approved or not.

The town’s staff, council, and members of the business community will work together to improve the ordinance before it has its second reading.

The next Plainfield Town Council meeting is 7 p.m. June 11.
