• Plainfield 53, 4A – #6 Brownsburg 50 – Girls High School Basketball

    December 15, 2011 No comments

A quick start and smothering defense allowed Plainfield to build a 15 point halftime lead and hold off the visiting 6th ranked Lady Bulldogs of Brownsburg 53-50 last night. The Quakers (7-2) scored the first 7 points of the contest and relied on their defense to hold off Brownsburg (7-2) after the Bulldogs Stephanie Mavunga cut the deficit to 2 at 52-50 late in the fourth quarter. But the Bulldogs were turned away on 5 successive trips down the court and Plainfield senior Lesley Fisher made a free throw with a little more than 15 seconds left in the game to give the Quakers the upset victory.

The Bulldogs trailed at halftime by the score of 32-17 but used a 16-7 third quarter to cut the deficit to 6 at 39-33 heading in to the fourth period. Brownsburg would pull no closer than two on Mavunga’s basket in the fourth. Mavunga led Brownsburg with 15 points. Kayle Comer also helped the Bulldogs pull close down the stretch with 14 points and Katie Reinhart finished with 13 points for Brownsburg.

Fisher led all scorers with 16 points including a basket at the buzzer to end the first half. Plainfield’s Mackenzie Jeffries scored 12 points with all of her points coming from behind the arc. Deann Cowell finished with 11 points for the Quakers.

In a game that turned close down the stretch, neither team distinguished themselves at the free throw line as the Quakers converted on only 2 of 9 attempts while the Bulldogs made only 3 of 8 from the charity stripe.

Both teams now have identical 7-2 records for the season. The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday when they host the Noblesville Millers in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference matchup. Tip-off for that game will be at 1:30 PM at the Varsity Fieldhouse. Plainfield’s next contest will be a Mid-State conference game at Martinsville on Friday night. Tip-off between the Quakers and ‘Arties will be at 7:30 PM.
