• Pike avenges three straight losses to Avon in sectional championship game

The Avon Oriole football team was competing in its 5th consecutive sectional championship game last Friday night. During the previous 3 seasons, the Orioles had eliminated the Pike Red Devils from the IHSAA tournament. On Friday night the Red Devils took out their frustration by returning the favor in a big way by knocking the Orioles out of the tournament and claiming their 2nd sectional championship in school history routing Avon 55 – 24.

The Red Devils spread offense and aggressive blitzing defense kept the Orioles off-balance for most of the night. Pike quickly went ahead by the score of 14 – 0 on a pair of Brent Liles touchdown passes to end the 1st quarter with a two touchdown lead.

The Orioles would get on the board in the 2nd quarter on a 4 yard touchdown run by Derrick Tennant to cut the deficit to seven but that would be as close as Avon could get as the Red Devils scored 20 unanswered points to end the 1st half leading 34 – 10 and were never seriously threatened the rest of the game.

Avon finished the season with a record of 7 – 5.
