The Avon Orioles rallied from an 18 point deficit but it took a last minute goal line stand for Avon to preserve a 25-21 victory Friday and deny the host Bulldogs a chance to defend their sectional title.

Avon’s Malcolm Jones and Lance Magee stopped Brownsburg’s Kennedy Hill on a fourth and goal from the 2 yard line in the final minute of play to help the Orioles advance to the Sectional Championship game Friday night.

Brownsburg burst out to a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter, but Avon countered with 22 unanswered points.

The first three possessions of the game for the Bulldogs led to three touchdowns as Robbins connected with Jordan Reagan on a 47-yard flea flicker pass with 9:20 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

The Orioles countered with a field goal on their first possession but Reagan’s 54-yard kick return gave the Bulldogs a short field. Eight plays later, the Bulldogs Isaac Beverstock plowed in from a yard out to give the Bulldogs a  14-3 with 2:00 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs defense forced and Oriole three and out and after a poor punt, Brownsburg was left with excellent field position. Robbins broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a commanding 21-3 lead early in the second quarter.

Brownsburg looked to build on their lead heading into the half, driving down to the Avon 30-yard line. But Robbins fumbled with under a minute left and three plays later Logan Haston hooked up with Kendall Griffin for a 46-yard touchdown pass to narrow the Brownsburg lead to 21-10 at the half.

Neither team had much success moving the ball in the third quarter but the fourth quarter was all Avon.

Haston scored on a 5-yard run early in the fourth quarter and found Griffin in the back of the end zone on the two-point conversion to move the Orioles to within a field goal at 21-18.

The Orioles quickly struck again on their next possession when Haston connected with Griffin on a 20-yard touchdown pass giving Avon their first lead of the game at 25-21 with over four minutes left to go in the game.

Brownsburg began its final drive from its own 35-yard line. Robbins hooked up on a 21 yard pass to Chase Dutra that gave the Bulldogs a first down at the Avon 11-yard line with a little over a minute and a half left to go in the game. Four plays later Hill was stopped at the 2-yard line ending the Bulldogs season.

Haston threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Griffin caught both touchdown passes and finished with 106 yards receiving. Haston also ran for another touchdown. Charles Davis led Avon’s rushing attack with 22 carries for 92 yards.

Robbins threw for 125 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 41 yards and a touchdown. Beverstock had 70 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Brownsburg finished its season with a 7-4 record, while Avon improved to 8-3 and has now won six of its last seven games.

The Orioles will host Pike at 7 p.m. Friday for the sectional championship. The 9-2 Red Devils have won eight straight and defeated Terre Haute North 17-7 Friday.

The Orioles and Red Devils hooked up in last year’s sectional semifinal with Avon coming out on top 10-7. The Orioles went on to fall to the Bulldogs in the championship game.
