The Carmel High School softball team had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning of a scoreless Class 4A state championship game against Avon on Saturday when No. 2 hitter Kennedy Haynes ripped a line drive into the right-center field gap.

Avon right fielder Lauren Woodrow made a spectacular effort, only to have the ball tick off the end of her glove and fall for the game-winning double in a 1-0 decision in front of a standing-room-only crowd at Ben Davis.

Erynn Petruzzi led off the bottom of the eighth for Carmel with a single to right and advanced to second on an error. No. 9 hitter Katie Bosler drew a walk and Kelsi Jones flew out to center, setting up Haynes’ game-winning drive.

Avon put a runner in scoring position against Carmel’s normally untouchable pitcher Katie Osborn in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings but could not convert. Haleigh Chasteen led off the fourth with a double but Osborn got a pair of strikeouts and a pop-up to end the threat.

Chasteen turned in a strong performance in the circle, not allowing a hit through four innings. Both teams also put on a show defensively.

Carmel second baseman Katie Stout scooped up a grounder and flipped the ball to first from her glove in the second to record an out. Avon first baseman Lizzy Snodgrass then leaped to corral a high throw to lead off the third and got her foot on the bag to record the out. Third baseman Taylar Kelso made a diving stop to end the inning.

Woodrow made a diving catch on Osborn in the fourth. Carmel first baseman Michelle Huber made a nice play on a bunt in the sixth and Haynes made a diving stop at third in the seventh. Avon center fielder Breanne Lahart had a diving catch in the bottom of the seventh.

The Orioles finished the season with a record of 26-8.
