Oriole volleyball squad takes undefeated record in to state final
November 01, 2011 No commentsAfter a devastating defeat in last season’s semistate round, the Avon Orioles volleyball team avenged that loss Saturday night with a semistate championship victory over the host Seymour Owls. The Orioles downed the Owls 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-12).
Avon was lead by senior Katie Higginbotham with 13 kills, while freshman Beth Prince tallied 11 to lead Avon’s strong net presence. Madison Reeves had 33 assists, Allison Bexell recorded 11 digs and Brooke Peters tallied 11 digs and 5 assists in the win.
Avon defeated New Castle 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-19) in the morning match.
Avon broke Seymour’s will after the Owls had taken a sizeable lead in the second set by coming from behind to pull out the win, then cruised to a third set victory and semi-state title.
The state championship match starts at 5 p.m. Nov. 5 at Ball State University’s Worthern Arena. No. 1-ranked Avon (39-0) takes on defending state champion and No. 2-ranked Penn (38-1).
