Oriole volleyball claims own Invitational
August 29, 2011 No commentsAvon Volleyball continued their winning ways with a successful weekend, coming away with the Avon Invitational Victory.
Avon started the day by defeating previously unbeaten Greenwood 25-14, 25-15 behind 5 kills by junior Emily Graves and 3 blocks by Junior Kayla Springer. Avon was led on offense by senior Madi Reeves 9 assists and sophomore Rachel Griffin’s 10 assists.
The second game matched Avon against Terre Haute South which ended in a 25-6, 25-11 victory. Avon was led by senior Jill Steinmetz and junior Kayla Springer’s 6 kills each and senior Emily Young’s 4 kills. The offense was again led by 11 assists by Madi Reeves and 12 by Rachel Griffin while senior Alli Bexell chipped in 7 digs and 3 aces.
The third match was the first match of the championship match pitting Avon against Franklin Community. After a rough beginning, Avon came away with a 20-25, 25-6, 15-12 victory. Madi Reeves had 23 assists, and Beth Prince had 12 kills. Senior Katie Higginbotham and Steinmetz each chipped in with 7 kills each.
The final match against sectional rival Perry Meridian also went Avon’s way as the Orioles defeated Perry Meridian 25-10, 25-16 behind Higginbotham’s 10 kills and Bexell and Rebecca Strange’s 3 aces each.
Next up is a home match against Lafayette Harrison on Thursday.
