• Oriole volleyball brings home Muncie Invitational title

    Avon volleyball continued a very successful weekend on Saturday winning the Muncie Invitational for the first time in school history.

    Avon started off the morning with #4 ranked Elkhart Memorial and came away with a 25-20, 25-16 win. The Orioles were led by freshman Beth Prince who had 8 kills while junior Emily Graves chipped in with 4 kills and 2 blocks.

    The Orioles next defeated nationally ranked (#27 in ESPN and #63 in PrepVolleyball) Yorktown in straight sets 28-26, 25-22. Avon defeated the #2 ranked team in Indiana class 3A behind 14 kills by freshman Beth Prince, 24 assists by senior Madi Reeves, 9 digs by senior Ali Bexell, and 3 blocks by senior Jill Steinmetz.

    Avon’s last match of pool play was against #3 in 4A Columbus East. Avon finished the pool play with a 25-19, 25-14 win behind 10 kills and 6 digs by senior Katie Higginbotham and 9 digs and 2 aces by senior Alli Bexell.

    The championship match was a rematch of last year’s semi-state loss for the Orioles with #3 ranked in 3A Muncie Central. Avon defeated the host school in the championship match 25-21, 25-19. Katie Higginbotham led the Orioles with 8 kills while Steinmetz had 5 kills and 4 blocks. Senior Madi Reeves also chipped in with 19 assists.

    Next up for the Orioles is a home match with the Martinsville Artesians tomorrow night at home. The Orioles record currently is 23-0.
