• New manhole covers installed in downtown Indianapolis

With less than two months until the Super Bowl kickoff, Indianapolis Power and Light officials are working to protect thousands of football fans from underground explosions by installing new manhole covers throughout downtown.

Crews began the installations on Thursday after multiple explosions damaged vehicles and alarmed downtown business owners.

The newly installed covers are considered hi-tech because they will only pop up two to three inches above the ground, acting as a vent for the underground gases in case of an explosion.

IPL officials said the new manhole covers meet the guidelines of the Department of Homeland Security and are tamper-proof.

IPL has dealt with at least six manhole explosions since Feb. 2010. The latest explosion occurred Nov. 19.

All new covers are expected to be in place by the end of the year.
