• Mud Hens down Tribe 5-1

    July 07, 2011 No comments

Starting pitcher Duane Below allowed just one run on four hits over seven strong innings, while left fielder Will Rhymes collected a game-high three hits and two runs to help lead the Toledo Mud Hens to the 5-1 victory over the Indianapolis Indians on Wednesday night at Victory Field.

Despite walking four, Below worked seven efficient innings to earn the victory and improve to 9-4 on the season

Following Below, Mud Hens relievers Daniel Schlereth and Brendan Wise combined for two innings of scoreless relief.

Toledo gave Below a quick lead sparked by Rhymes, who led off the game with a double to right and came around to score on a clutch two-out base hit by DH Ryan Strieby.

The Indians would even the score with a run of their own in the bottom of the third, as CF Gorkys Hernandez led off with a walk and eventually came around to score the lone Tribe run on a groundout by LF John Bowker.

The Mud Hens however got two runs in the bottom of the fifth, on a two-run double off the bat of Major Leaguer Carlos Guillen, to take the lead for good.

After taking the 3-1 lead in the fifth, Toledo would tack on some insurance with single runs in the sixth and eighth innings. SS Cale Iorg brought home the score in the sixth when he lined a one out base hit to center to plate RF Ben Guez, who ripped a ground-rule double to left-center earlier in the inning.

Rhymes would then put a bow on the victory and his excellent effort when he drove home the final Mud Hens run with a two-out single in the top of the eighth.

Despite striking out a season-high eight batters, Tribe starter Rudy Owens surrendered three runs on eight hits to suffer the loss and fall to 6-6 on the season.

Indianapolis now heads on the road for a short two-game series in Louisville, beginning with a 7:05 p.m. game tonight. LHP Justin Wilson is scheduled to take the mound for the Tribe in search of his International League best 10th win of the season, while Louisville has yet to announce a starter.
