• Mosquitoes come early to central Indiana

    June 04, 2012 No comments

Health officials are seeing a record number of mosquitoes, including those that can carry the West Nile virus, after an unseasonably warm winter in central Indiana.

The Indiana State Department of Health reported Monday that mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus were found breeding in a pool in Orange County.

The Marion County Health Department’s Mosquito Control teams started fielding reports of the annoying insects in early March, about a month earlier than normal.

Crews began fogging neighborhoods last week, hoping to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Experts said they’re also seeing an abundance of the type of mosquito that can pose a health risk.
