A group of young local musicians’ talent earned them an invitation to be a part of one of the nation’s most popular New Year traditions, the Rose Parade in Pasedena, Calif.

The Avon Marching Black & Gold left Indianapolis early Thursday morning, some of them already in shorts in anticipation of a winter weekend in the West Coast. A group of students, directors, parents and fans – 550 in all – made the trip in three separate planes.

The group was invited to participate because of a national title they won in three consecutive years, 2008-10. Bands usually have to audition to participate in the parade.

The group will join Ben Davis High School who are also performing in the parade, their seventh time doing so.
