A man carrying a small case was detained after a bomb scare IU-Health South Campus building Monday afternoon, police said.

Witnesses reported seeing police activity at 16th Street and Capital Avenue around 2:30 p.m.

An IMPD spokesperson said that the man reportedly walked into the hospital telling the employees at the reception desk that he needed to talk to the FBI.

He told the employees that he planted “bombs” around the hospital and then walked out the door.

An off-duty IMPD officer spotted the man carrying a small metal case as he walked away from the hospital. The suspect fled as the officer ordered him to stop.

The officer drew his stun gun and stunned the fleeing man.

The bomb squad was called in to evaluate and detonate the metal case. Police say it was not a bomb.

The suspect, who police say is known to have mental issues, was taken into custody.
