A woman is dead and her husband hospitalized after police found them both shot at a house in the 8200 block of North Hendricks County Road 400 West late Monday night.

Investigators, who spoke to one witness, said the man shot the woman, then turned the gun on himself.

That witness, described as a friend who was living in the couple’s barn, called 911 to report the shooting. He is being questioned by police.

According to the friend, he and the couple were drinking in their barn, and the couple began to argue. When she left the barn area and headed toward the house, her husband followed. When the friend heard a single gunshot, he went to house, saw the woman lying on the sidewalk, left and called 911. During the call, he said he heard two more shots.

Lt. Jim Yetter of the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department said that when medics arrived, they pronounced the woman dead. Her 37-year-old husband was still alive and flown to St. Vincent Hospital in very serious condition.

Inside the house a toddler was found, unharmed. It is believed the child did not see the shooting. A grandmother took the child from the scene.

Yetter said the couple has lived together for six or seven years, and that the Sheriff’s department has not responded to any domestic runs to the house before the shooting.

Police are not identifying the couple until relatives have been properly notified of the shootings.
