IU Health plans to ‘Twittercast’ kidney transplant
June 12, 2012 No commentsIndiana University Health officials hope to raise awareness of living kidney donations by letting people follow such a procedure on Twitter as it is happening.
The Indianapolis Star reports the hospital will “Twittercast” the surgery Wednesday. Other hospitals have done the same thing with more lengthy procedures, such as brain surgeries. Hospital spokesman Gene Ford says IU Health wanted to do a relatively short and low-risk surgery.
IU Health will send six to 10 Tweets an hour about the surgeries on Wednesday, interspersed with general facts about organ donations. Surgeons will answer questions for followers.
The hospital says the kidney is the most demanded organ needed for transplant.
