An Indiana State Police Trooper is being credited with saving an elderly woman from choking at a central Indiana restaurant on New Year’s Day.

Indiana State Police say Master Trooper Dan Hearon was off-duty and out of uniform when he noticed a fellow Plainfield Cracker Barrel customer was choking.

Witnesses told police Hearon calmly got up from his table, approached the distressed family and offered his help. Hearon administered the Heimlich maneuver on the 90-year-old woman and dislodged the item on which she was choking.

Medics were called to the scene and determined the woman did not need to be taken to the hospital.

The woman’s daughter called ISP to thank them for Trooper Hearon’s professionalism and calm demeanor.

Hearon currently serves as a K-9 patrol officer at the Bloomington Post. He primarily patrols in Morgan County.
