• ISP arrest an Ex Clay County trustee

    September 26, 2011 No comments

A former township trustee in Clay County was arrested Friday on theft and forgery charges, accused of misusing more than $71,000 in township funds.

Indiana State Police said former Van Buren Township Trustee Paul H. Hackett of Brazil, wrote checks on the township account to pay personal expenses, including auto payments and repair bills, utility bills and credit card bills. The misuse of funds occurred during his four-year term as trustee, from 2007 through 2010, ISP said.

A utility company alerted the state Board of Accounts when it received a township check for a payment on Hackett’s personal sccount, triggering an audit of the township books by the state, ISP said. The board then contacted ISP to investigate in May 2010.

The 62 year old Hacket was arrested at about 5 p.m. Friday and was being held at the Clay County Jail on $10,000 bond.
