• INDOT reminds Hoosiers heading south about delays near Louisville

    November 23, 2011 No comments

The Indiana Department of Transportation is reminding travelers heading south for the Thanksgiving weekend to expect delays from the closure of a major bridge over the Ohio River.

The Sherman Minton Bridge that links New Albany with Louisville, Ky., along Interstate 64 has been closed since Sept. 9 after an approximately 2 1/2-inch-long crack was found in a steel support beam. I-64 traffic is being detoured over I-265 and I-65.

The Transportation Department says southbound I-65 traffic should also anticipate daytime delays and peak Thanksgiving traffic backups in Southern Indiana. Agency officials say southbound traffic consistently backs up for miles during daylight hours.

On the other side, motorists traveling I-65 northbound from Kentucky into Indiana have little more delay than they did prior to the bridge closing.
