• Indians Slug Way Past Tides

    August 11, 2010 No comments

Outfielders John Bowker, Mitch Jones and Alex Presley combined to go 7-for-12 with five runs scored and eight RBI to propel the Indianapolis Indians’ offense to 10 runs on 12 hits as the Tribe went on to outslug the Norfolk Tides 10-6 on Tuesday night at Victory Field.

Norfolk jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two run homer by 3B Scott Moore in the top half of the second inning.

The Tribe then chipped away at the Tides lead in their half of the second when Bowker launched a solo shot for his first home run in an Indians’ uniform, before the Tides regained their two-run edge with a single run in the third.

Norfolk led 3-1 going in to the bottom of the third inning when the Tribe staged a two-out, three-run rally to take its first lead of the evening.

The Tribe’s lead was short-lived, however, as Norfolk reclaimed the advantage at 5-4 when C Adam Donachie hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run on a ground ball down the left field line with no outs in the top of the fourth inning.

Indianapolis retook the lead for good when it plated four runs on four hits in the home half of the fourth frame. With runners standing at first and third with one out in the inning, CF Alex Presley lined his fourth triple of the season to the right-center field gap and gave the Indians the 6-5 edge.

Indianapolis capped the four run fourth with an RBI double and later an RBI single which gave the Tribe an 8-5 lead.

The Indians would score twice more in the sixth before Norfolk scratched across their final run of the game in the top of the eighth.

RHP Joe Martinez earned his first win in an Indians’ uniform after he allowed four earned runs in five innings of work, while Tides’ starter Chris George left the contest after being hit by a line drive in the bottom of the first inning. Norfolk reliever Cla Meredith was strapped with his second loss of the year after allowing four runs on three hits in one inning of work.

The victory moves the Indians’ back to the .500 mark with record of 59-59 on the season.

The Indians continue their four-game series against the Norfolk Tides today with a 1:00 p.m. matinee. LHP Brian Burres is expected to get the start for the Tribe, while RHP Tim Bascom is the probable starter for the Tides.
