The Indianapolis Indians open up their season tonight with a 7:05 game at Victory Field against International League Western Division rival the Columbus Clippers. The Indian’s finished last year in 3rd place in the IL with a 71-73 record and battled Louisville and Columbus for much of the year for the division lead before an August swoon ended their title hopes.

This year’s team will be managed by first year manager Dean Treanor who was the pitching coach for the Tribe last year. Indianapolis returns the Pittsburgh Pirates Minor League Hitter of the Year in Alex Preley along with shortstop Pedro Ciriaco and lefthander Daniel Moskos. In all, seven members from last year’s squad return for the 2011 camapign.

The Indians have 10 players ranked by Baseball America as top prospects including left handers Rudy Owens and Justin Wilson and speedsters Chase d’Arnaud and Corey Wimberly.

In fact speed will be the central theme to the Tribe this season. Indianapolis stole 132 bases last year and with the loss of sluggers like Brandon Moss, Pedro Alverez and Kevin Melilo the Tribe will rely on the speed of Wimberly who stole 56 bases for Sacramento of the PCL last season and d’Arnaud who stole 33 for AA Altoona as the Indian’s look to become a more station-to-station team this year.

Lefthander Brian Burres will take the mound for the Tribe in the season opener tonight. Burres finished with a 5-4 record and a 4.50 ERA in 15 starts for the Tribe. Burres also spent time with The Pirates making 20 appearances with 13 starts for the parent club and compiling a 4.99 ERA. The Tribe will square off against Columbus starter David Huff. The Clippers left hander went 8-2 last season with 12 starts and a 4.36 ERA.
