Democratic Indiana Sen. Joe Donnelly said Wednesday he’s eager to see what is in a proposal President Barack Obama will announce that is expected to include a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

In an interview on RTV6’s “Good Morning Indiana,” Donnelly affirmed his support for the Second Amendment, but said, “I’m also a dad. I want to make sure that every child who goes to school can feel safe, everyone who goes to work can feel safe.”

Obama’s proposal is also expected to include an effort to stop bullying and increase the availability of mental health services.

Donnelly isn’t sure yet if he’ll support Obama’s proposal, but he said limiting access to firearms is something that needs to be done.

Donnelly said “In the area of mental health, we have an awful lot we have to do to make sure that people who have challenges cannot get their hands on weapons. I think that’s absolutely critical.”
