• Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson Teams Up With Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana

    June 21, 2013 No comments

Secretary of State Connie Lawson called on Central Indiana Hoosiers to participate in a food collection drive for those facing the threat of hunger. Secretary Lawson is again teaming up with Gleaners Food Bank after a successful collection during the Thanksgiving season last year.

In Indiana, there are almost 800,000 people living in poverty and 16 percent of children in Indiana are food insecure. Also, roughly 80,000 children in the Indianapolis metropolitan area will go hungry this summer because they will not have access to meals typically provided by their school system.

“Hunger knows no season. I thank everyone who participated in our Thanksgiving Gleaners food collection and I implore them to give again,” said Secretary Lawson. “If you’re near the Statehouse, I hope you’ll consider coming in to drop off food items or a monetary contribution.”

Gleaners Food Bank was chosen by Secretary Lawson because they provide 61 percent of the food used by pantries, 31 percent of meals distributed by food kitchens and 33 percent of local shelters’ food. Since its founding in 1980, Gleaners has distributed more than 300 million pounds of food and grocery supplies to over 350 hunger relief agencies that serve people in need of emergency food assistance in 21 Indiana counties. In Gleaners’ service area, there are over 287,000 individuals living in poverty, and at least 103,000 of those people are children under the age of 18. Every year, over 160,000 Hoosiers rely on the Gleaners’ network as their source of food.

Secretary Lawson said “I am looking forward to working with Gleaners again. Their hard work and dedication to eliminating hunger in Indianapolis exemplifies what it means to be a Hoosier. I am very proud of our partnerships to help Hoosiers in need.”
