• Indiana legislature session comes to close today with unsettled issues

    March 09, 2012 No comments

Indiana lawmakers plan on ending this year’s session on Friday, but still must decide whether they’re going to approve a statewide smoking ban and how quickly the state inheritance tax should be phased out.

Final approval also is needed on a plan that would end fees for full-day kindergarten by directing about $80 million in state money to school districts for those programs. That bill also makes a one-time additional payment of $6 million for victims of last summer’s deadly Indiana State Fair stage collapse.

Budget leaders have agreed on the proposed phase-out of the state inheritance tax, but some legislators argue the 10-year time span is too long.

Legislators also are still talking about whether bars should be exempted from the smoking ban.
