• Indiana House Collects Most Of Democrats’ Boycott Fines

    September 22, 2011 No comments

The Indiana House has collected most of the fines that many Democratic members faced for their five-week boycott during this year’s session. The fines per member totaled roughly $3,000 each.

House records showed that more than $100,000 has been collected from the 39 Democrats whose boycott blocked any legislative action.

The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne reported that only about $12,000 remains uncollected.

Most has been collected through deductions from the legislators’ expense checks, while some have directly paid their fines.

The fines were assessed after Democrats set up shop in Illinois to keep the House from voting on contentious education and labor bills.

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma says the money will go into the House budget and if it is unspent at the end of the fiscal year, it will be returned to the state’s general fund.
