• IHSAA to end team-wrestling tournament

The Indiana High School Athletic Association will discontinue its state team-wrestling tournament after the upcoming season.

The IHSAA announced Monday its executive committee voted 14-0 to drop the tournament. Commissioner Bobby Cox says interest in the team championship has waned in recent years and created a hardship among wrestlers advancing in the individual championships.

The Indianapolis Star reports the state’s wrestling coaches and officials have known for nearly two years the IHSAA was studying the change amid lower attendance and some coaches holding their top wrestlers out to better prepare them for the individual championships.

The IHSAA will revert back to the way it determined a team champion prior to 1996, by a point system used at the individual tournament.
