Five years after opening Dawson’s on Main in Speedway, Chris Hill and his family are planning to expand with a second restaurant — Dawson’s Too in Brownsburg — and maybe a third in Plainfield.

Dawson’s on Main opened in June 2006. It was a longtime dream of the Hill family of Brownsburg — father Gary; his sons, Chris and Tony; daughter Barb Lesko; and family friend Danny Godan, Clermont.

Godan and Tony Hill had worked together in other Westside restaurants, and the partners jumped at the chance to open their own place in Speedway.

The historic building at 15th and Main streets has been home to many businesses over time, including a plumbing supplies showroom.

Dawson’s, named for one of Tony’s sons, seats about 148 in the dining room and more on the sidewalk and in the bar. Hoosier-style tenderloins are favorites on the menu at lunch, steaks and seafood at dinner. The menu at Dawson’s Too, set to open in a shopping center at Hornaday and U.S. 136, will be similar. Lunch items will be priced from $7 to $10, dinner from $12 to $25.

At the Speedway location, lunch on a typical day in May will find many of the Indianapolis 500 race drivers and teams making a food stop. The rest of the year, lunchtime often finds owners or managers of Indy racing teams with executives from Dallara, the Italian maker of Indy racecars that’s building its North American assembly plant across Main.

The unusual mix of customers, motorsports and families will likely be similar in the two locations. Speedway is home to Indy cars; Brownsburg is home to drag racing and other teams.

The Dawson’s partners also have acquired a second state alcohol permit that could allow them another location in Speedway. Chris Hill said they have been scouting potential sites along Main Street or in the retail and restaurant district of Plainfield.
