A Missouri man is in serious condition Friday morning after a fiery crash that closed I-70 for several hours.

It happened around 3:00 am Friday on eastbound I-70 near Post Road. Indiana State Police say Marcus Moore of St. Louis, 51, blew a tire on his semi, causing him to swerve off the road, hit the guard rail, and ride the rail approximately 30 yards until striking the overhead interstate sign post. The semi then caught fire.

Moore was transported via Lifeline helicopter to Wishard Hospital where he is being treated for second- and third-degree burns to his body.

The crash closed the interstate for several hours Friday morning. INDOT assisted Indiana State Police with the closing of the exit ramps from EB I-70 from I-465 north and southbound. As of 9:35 am, westbound lanes were open again.

Drivers can exit 465 at Washington Street and Pendleton Pike.

IMPD is assisting with traffic lights on Post Road in an effort to keep traffic moving on I-70.

As of 9:35 am, police said it would take up to four hours to reopen I-70.

The overhead sign was damaged and is not structurally sound due to heat damage from the fire.

Because it was a crash involving hazardous materials, firefighters have to clear the scene before INDOT can have access to the overhead sign. INDOT and their crews have a crane heading to the scene and when the scene is clear, they will remove the sign.
