• I-465 gets a new name

Travelers in the state capital soon will see signs for the USS Indianapolis Memorial Highway.

The Interstate 465 loop around Indianapolis was formally renamed Tuesday for the cruiser sunk in shark-infested waters of the Pacific Ocean during the closing days of World War II. The 600-foot-long ship was hit by Japanese torpedoes on July 30, 1945, just says after delivering components for the atomic bomb later dropped on Hiroshima.

The Indianapolis’ death toll of 880 members from a crew of nearly 1,200 men is the U.S. Navy’s worst single at-sea loss of life.

Democratic State Rep. John Bartlett of Indianapolis authored the law to rename the highway earlier this year. He told WIBC-FM that it’s a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives in the disaster.
